This project was preparing during two years. At the first stage, the possibilities of transshipment were checking, because heavy cranes in Zaporozhie Port are not available, possibilities of rail of road transport from the Port to the Plant of oversized cargo which exceeds too much maximum possible "frames" of width and height.
LOGIS' offices in Versailles, Moscow and Mariupol, also Partners-Companies, Pridneprovskaya Railway and River Institute were involved in development of this project.
And, finally, in October, 2005, the first vessel under foreign flag was berthed in Zaporozhie River Port with the first lot of oversized and heavy equipment on board. Two rail cranes and the chain of special rail platforms were ready - positioned on quay for discharge of cargo.
After discharge and necessary lashing and securing works our overdimensional train was dispatched to Zaporozhstal. In front of train was the wagon with "control frame" and five empty rail platforms for urgent inhibition. Everything happened successfully and the first lot of materials was delivered to site just in time.
In few days arrival of next vessel was expected, and therefore, we did not have a possibility to relax and drink champagne. In spite of the fact that the scheme of transport was already tried and tested in battle, the preparation for new transport was done anew by the reason of bigger dimensions and weights. The wagons of bigger capacity were supplied to the port. The new "abnormal" control frame was passed through the route. As was expected, some points were critical for passing of ODC, but, LOGIS always has a solution in the pocket.
As a consequence of our job, for the first time in Zaporozhie Port were discharged pieces up to 77 tons of weight using two railway cranes, for the first time the cargo 5050 mm dia was transported by this rail track, for the first time to Metallurgical Plant Zaporozhstal this kind of cargo was delivered and the final assembling of equipment at site was not necessary.
During realization of this project, absolutely new ideas of transshipment and transport operations were applied, which are opening new possibilities for performance of transports of oversized and heavy equipment by rail ways 1520 mm.
Besides of this project, more than 20 other projects and shipments with various equipment, pipes, containers etc. were done by LOGIS in 2005.
